Rakon introduces VCSOs with High Frequency and Low Phase Noise Performance

Rakon VCSO

Rakon has launched a new product family, expanding its broad product offering further. The ‘RSV’ Voltage Controlled SAW Oscillator (VCSO) family, uniquely positions Rakon SAW technology in the market. The family’s advanced Surface Acoustic Wave technology enables the ultimate in performance for low voltage applications that require excellent phase noise performance at very high frequencies.

The RSV2522 series is ideal for the latest generation of high speed converters, which require a high frequency clock with low jitter. The RSV2522-800, RSV2522-1000, RSV2522-1600 and RSV2522-2000 generate frequencies of 800MHz, 1GHz, 1.6GHz and 2GHz respectively.

The series uses high performance SAW resonators to generate 800MHz and 1GHz frequency outputs, and each are combined with a frequency doubler to reach 1.6GHz and 2GHz frequencies, respectively. The VCSOs can be easily locked to a stable reference through a Phase Locked Loop system, or they can be used as a SAW clock without the need for external circuitry. The RSV2522 series has low power consumption since a single +5V power supply is required, and performance is guaranteed over the full industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C.

Available in a 25 x 22 x 5 mm3 SMD package the RSV2522 series offers a noise floor as low as -172 dBc/Hz (for 1GHz output) and has an outstanding broadband jitter performance of below 10 fs.

CEO Marti McCurdy Profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Entrepreneur & Bloomberg Businessweek

This article appears in the June 2019 issues of ForbesFortuneEntrepreneur and Bloomberg Businessweek magazines.

Though Marti McCurdy became the owner and CEO of Spirit Electronics less than two years ago, she is by no means an industry rookie. Spirit Electronics is, in fact, the fourth company she’s owned since her engineering post in the United States Air Force.

Her military foundation, she says, not only gave her solid technical experience, it also provided a firsthand understanding of the military’s systems and quality methods. Add to that her decades of experience in business ownership, and she was well primed for the opportunity to take the helm of Spirit Electronics, a veteran-owned, woman-owned small business that supplies products and services to the aerospace and telecommunications industries and the U.S. Department of Defense.

But like any business venture, the opportunity still came with risks.

“One of the greatest challenges a new business owner faces is getting the company’s employees to be as committed as you are to move the company forward. I’m grateful this team has been 100 percent behind me since day one,” she says. “I have no fear of diving in, just an insatiable drive to get in there and see how much we can do with the existing capabilities to grow and expand beyond our current potential.”

Tangible Results

Within her first year of ownership, McCurdy doubled the number of employees and doubled the revenue of any previous year. She streamlined and reorganized her sales force, leading to greater productivity and happier employees. “It’s about working smarter,” she says. “I’m very direct. I don’t necessarily need to hear about A to B. I care about A to Z—tell me the outcome.”

As a “cradle-to-grave” product supplier, Spirit Electronics prides itself on the highest standards of quality. “We can take a product all the way from design, to foundry, to assembly and test, and deliver a space-qualified component to the customer for military or space application,” McCurdy explains. “Because we’re a unique supplier involved in each step of the full turnkey process, we’re able to guarantee every part of the product.”

Breaking Glass Ceilings

At any given event or conference for her industry, McCurdy is typically just one of a handful of women in a room full of men. One such meeting was in October 2018, during a roundtable discussion with President Trump, in which McCurdy was invited to join industry titans in speaking to the current climate of the military and aerospace industries.

Her success has inspired her to encourage other young women to consider tech careers—starting with a pursuit of math and science education at a young age. “I want young girls to know that engineering and tech careers are not geeky. These fields are exciting and cutting edge,” McCurdy says.

In the coming year, Spirit Electronics will be partnering with global agencies in the space community to revitalize the United States space program, an opportunity that is “hand and glove for us,” says McCurdy, and that will double the company’s size with new talent and extend its presence on both coasts.

“That said, I’m very protective of our company culture and ensure that every new employee fits with our team chemistry,” she adds. “We’re all on board with giving back to our community and committed to moving forward in our careers.

“The team is truly the backbone of this company. I’m just here to guide them.”

AVX Releases First 175°C Rated MLV Transient Voltage Suppressor

AVX is pleased to announce its latest multilayer varistor SMD solution for overvoltage protection in high-temperature applications. The VT Series now expands the temperature range of overvoltage protection to 175°C.

AVX leads the way for multilayer varistor devices by incorporating a modified grain boundary to the zinc oxide based ceramic semiconductor material that is reliable at high temperatures. Grain size and boundary interface correspond to clamping voltage, and multiple values are available. This unique design expresses qualities of back-to-back zener diodes in the on-state, with the added benefit of greater current and energy withstanding properties. In the off-state, the monolithic construction of electrodes and ceramic layers offer EMC benefits, obsoleting the need for discrete TVS diodes and EM filter capacitor on a communications bus.

Features / Benefits:

  • Multiple Strike Capability Compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 25kV Direct Contact ESD
  • Zero Temp. Derating Across Full Operating Temperature Range of -55° C to 175° C

Spirit Electronics Receives Veteran Institute for Procurement GROW Certification

Veteran Institute for Procurement Graduate

Spirit Electronics recently completed the Veteran Institute Procurement (VIP) GROW Program, a comprehensive training and certification program that helps veteran-owned businesses strengthen their ability to win government contracts and do business with both military and civilian agencies they once served in uniform.

Veteran Institute for Procurement - National Center GraduateOn March 28, 2019, Spirit Electronics was one of 49 businesses from 13 states and the District of Columbia to graduate from the Veteran Institute for Procurement (VIP) GROW Program. Spirit was a guest of Lockheed Martin for attendance to the class.

“Attaining the VIP GROW certification gives Spirit Electronics more resources, credibility and knowledge in procuring government contracts,” said Marti McCurdy, CEO of Spirit Electronics. “I’m proud to be a US veteran and grateful to continue to serve our country through our company’s business.”

The first program of its kind in the nation, VIP GROW is conducted by professional subject-matter specialists in the essentials necessary to win government contracts: law, accounting, insurance, human resources, marketing and proposals. It also provides participants with access to Federal and prime contracting executives along with a national network of veteran owned small businesses that they can team with on opportunities.

Since its launch in 2009, VIP GROW has helped 880 service-disabled and veteran-owned small businesses grow.  A survey of 426 of the program’s graduates determined that the size of their businesses increased by an average of 64% within a year of graduating from the Institute. More than 82% of surveyed graduates credited VIP GROW for equipping them to make recent business decisions and avoid unseen pitfalls. Additionally, veteran-owned businesses are more likely to hire, mentor and train other war veterans as they transition to private life, which is a national priority.

“We are honored to give back to the men and women who served our country by providing them with the tools necessary to succeed as government contractors.” said Barbara Ashe, President of the Montgomery County Chamber Community Foundation. “We hope this training fosters their success as businesses and employers.”
